Ian received this book from his mom, which makes me wonder about the relationship between Ian and his mother. I think this in the top five books that I would never want to get as a gift from my mom. I hate getting self-help books from people anyway; it feels so smug and self-righteous to give one of these books as a gift. For me, it sends the message that I have a problem and I need help. Well, first of all, I am painfully aware of all my faults; they are screaming neon beacons on my psyche. Every time I lose my temper or blurt out the truth in an oh so tactless way, I know exactly what's wrong with me. Even if people don't talk about their faults, most people are aware of what is wrong with them, even if it is only on a subconscious level. So, if I need a self-help book, I will buy one - it's clear in the genre name, SELF-help.
Inscription reads: "Ian, Read with an open mind - given with an open heart. Love you! Mom"
