Shepherds Abiding

I wish each inscribed book I found would come with a time machine; I want to know who the giver and receivers of these books are - why isn't the book with the person it was meant for right now? Why did it end up being given away?

 

Inscription reads: "To Marilyn - A real nice story for Christmas holidays. I enjoyed it too. Love, Matthew. 2004"
