The Kids' Question & Answer Book

This Lonesome Book also has a date of 5/16. It was a life-changing day for me and for some reason, I feel the need to rescue any book that has that date.

This book probably would have sat on the shelf at the thrift store for a long time. The information is really dated and the pictures are hysterical...it definitely shows age. The girl on the cover is so adorable, with her zipper earrings and goofy hat, she takes me back to the 80's. I'm such a sucker for freckles too. Just looking at her makes me happy.

Kevin celebrated his 32nd birthday this past May 16.

Inscription reads, "5/16/89. To Kevin on your 12th birthday. Love, Dad & Mom"

Pride's Castle

No inscription today, just a signature in this one, probably from the owner...but with yesterday's post, a book given to a "Mary Lou" and this book with the name "Mary Lou", I was wondering if they might be related. Also, this book has a date of 5/16/61, and 5/16 is my son's birthday, an important date in my life. I always have the strangest reasons for rescuing books.

Signature reads, "Mary Lou Stinger. 5/16/61."

The Great Lover's Manifesto

The book description for this book includes this statement, "Take the risk to love and be loved."

I am somewhat cynical about self-help books. Everything that a person can learn from a self-help book just seems to be commonsense. And if rate of disposal of a book is an indication of having gotten what you needed from that book, then self-help books would make up a strong portion of the books at thrift stores.

There is one particular thrift store that I go to that has the gamut of self-help books. Starting in the mid 1960's all the way up until now, there is one bookshelf devoted to healing your heart, your mind, your soul. It's the same recycled mantra over and over.

I hope Mary Lou, whom this book is inscribed to, found love and didn't need this manifesto anymore.

Inscription reads, "To Mary Lou. Dave Grant. 6/86."

Oh, The Places You'll Go!

No Lonesome Book today; this book has a home. But it also has a very nice inscription. My father-in-law received this book as a graduation gift from his MBA program from a fellow cohort.

Inscription reads, "Jon, Thank you for all your help and support throughout the program.  May you now have more time to fish!  Thank you! Mike"

Moby Dick or The Whale

This book doesn't have an inscription, but it does have an attractive bookplate and is just a really beautiful book. Also, my husband said he wouldn't mind owning this particular copy.

In a way, it is a Lonesome book though, because I found it in the very bottom shelf of a tiny bookcase at the thrift store. Only someone digging through the mess would have found this book.

Bookplate reads, "Published expressly for the personal library of Warren E. Hein. The Easton Press."

Christmas - Traditions & Legends

Here is another Christmas book. This book has two inscriptions, one from the author and one from the givers.

I've never seen this book before, but it has amazingly researched information about all Christmas traditions. I would have liked to receive this book as a gift and would have been excited to unwrap it every year along with all my Christmas decorations. Now the book is mine and I will cherish it. I will take it out every year and sit with my children and learn about the different names for Santa Claus around the world (Babbo Natale in Italy) and about the history of the Candy Cane and many other Christmas traditions.

Inscription #1 reads: Christmas 2007. "To Nicole: A very special time! Merry Christmas - Pete & Keni"

Inscription #2 (author inscribed) reads "Christmas 2007. To: Nicole. May you always believe in the magic and wonder of Christmas. Doris L. Baines"

The Jesus Tree

Christmas books and books for children seem to have the most inscriptions so it seems fitting that this particular book is both.

Inscriptions reads, "Merry Christmas, 1991 Alishia Musgrave from Great Grandma and Grandpa Haney"
